This year will mark the fourth year of the Clean Acres’ mission to bring local, fresh, chemical-free produce to the Piatt County area. It is with this goal that we hope to lessen the effects of chronic diseases and help people lead healthier lifestyles through the foods that they consume.
We have been busy this growing season getting ready for harvest 2018. In order to provide chemical-free produce year after year, much of our time continues to be focused on making good soil. It has been and will continue to be a process, and we are seeing those efforts pay off. We’ve used cover crops, crop rotation, and low-till management practices to help improve the soil’s overall microbial content. These soil improvements have turned a crusted, hard soil into a more nutrient-rich environment. Some improvements include beneficial insects, more worm activity, better drainage, and moisture retention.
In an effort to help people lead healthier lifestyles, the Clean Acres’ mission continues to bring consumers closer to the foods that they eat and the farm from which they are harvested. We hope to add small farm to fork events this year where children and adults alike will experience harvesting produce and turning it into a meal. Adding to more on-farm opportunities, a new children’s garden invites participants to explore and to see where food comes from.
In other updates, instead of on-farm pick-up, we plan to sell directly to consumers at our local grocery store, JTA Foods and Grill in Bement. A fresh harvest will be delivered on Fridays. We will post our harvest information on our website, www.cleanacresproduce.org, so that you can plan your grocery trip to JTA.
JTA Foods & Grill (900 N. Macon, Bement) is open Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
